Refunding fever is certainly catching on. Like Mary Anne Hayes, Lady's Circle's Coupon Lady, (see "How the 'Coupon Lady' Saves $2500 a Year on Food," August 1978 issue; "The Coupon Lady Showed Me How to Shop for Food," November, 1978 issue), thousands of refunders have discovered that refunding makes sense and saves cents and dollars at the grocery checkout counter. Susan Samtur, 34, is another one of the growing numbers of women cashing in on refunding. A housewife and mother of two young boys from Yonkers, New York, she saves 50% on her grocery bill each week. That amounts to a total of over $1000 saved on groceries each year, just for taking advantage of the refund offers attached to household products she likes to buy. And Susan reaps an additional $1,500 in cash each year from the money-back offers sponsored by different food manufacturers. Susan, a former elementary school teacher in New York City, says she first became interested in refunding about seven years ago when she and her husband, Stephen, bought the house in which they now live. "When you buy a house, you discover that you suddenly have about a hundred more expenses. I started refunding to make fl couple of extra dollars," she said. "Like most people, I didn't realize just how much it can pay off." If you're one of those people who still doesn't know about the extra dollars that can be saved on your normal food and household expenditures through refunding, read on. Refunds are a reimbursement. First off, refunds are different from cash-offs, the coupons you see in newspapers and magazines that give you a few cents off an item. This is what a cash-off or cents-off coupon looks like: Refund offers are a sort of reimbursement, the company's way of paying you back for trying its product. This is what a refund offer looks like: Sometimes the company refunds the full purchase price of a product or sends a gift that is worth more than the product in exchange for "qualifiers" like package wrappers, labels, or ingredients panels. These refund offers cover all types of products and foodstuffs, including canned goods, milk products, pet foods, toiletry articles, and even the most expensive items on your shopping list, fresh produce, dairy products, and meats.
